How to do a traditional Hatha Yoga Sun Salutation
This is a traditional way to do a Hatha Yoga Sun Salutation! SOOOOO GOOOOD!!
I love these as they really accentuate opening in the hip flexors (psoas muscles) and the chest - great for starting a front body opening sequence - if you’re gonna highlight back bends in your sequence it will help prepare your body to safely back bend (as space in your hip flexors and chest and shoulders help to facilitate this!)
I would recommend doing 4 - switching the feet each time around.
Hatha Yoga Sun Salutations also help you quickly connect to your breath through the movement. Eventually 1 breath per pose as your breath capacity expands, but if you feel like you’re holding your breath or rushing through the movement then take some more! Better to breathe than to not :)
They may feel quick, but they do help prepare you for a sequence to practice afterwards, or you can try them on their own as a quick way to move your body and get connected to your breath if you feel like you’re short on time!
How to start?? Inhale raise up your arms - exhale fold forward (bent knees) - inhale step your left foot back and put your knee on the floor, fingertips floor or thigh, opening up the collar bone - exhale step back right foot to downward facing dog - inhale in down dog - exhale through knees chest chin - inhale slide through to cobra pose - exhale push back through both knees to downward facing dog - inhale step you’re left foot forward, put your right knee floor into another low lunge - exhale step your left foot forward into a forward fold - inhale to standing reaching up the arms - exhale release to standing pose.
